Carrying gold from Abu Dhabi to India?

A returning male passenger can bring up to 20 g of gold jewellery duty-free and a female passenger up to 40 g; anything above is taxed, and your allowance depends on how long you've stayed abroad. Bars and coins are not covered by the jewellery allowance. Always declare gold on arrival.

About gold prices in Abu Dhabi

One rate across all seven emirates

UAE gold is a single nationwide rate, so Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah all show the same per-gram price on any given day. If you see a "Abu Dhabi gold rate", it's the same number as Dubai — only the making charges and shop offers vary. That's why our Abu Dhabi rate is based on the live Dubai gold price.

24K, 22K, 21K and 18K in Abu Dhabi

21K (87.5% pure) is the everyday Gulf jewellery standard, brighter and a little harder than 22K. 24K is for bars and investment, 22K is favoured by Indian and South Asian buyers, and 18K suits diamond and modern pieces. VAT of 5% applies to jewellery and making charges, but investment-grade 999 bars are zero-rated.

Why UAE gold is cheaper than India

India adds import duty and GST on top of the metal, while the UAE charges only 5% VAT on jewellery and nothing on investment bars and coins. The metal itself tracks the same global dollar price — so the gap is tax and margin, not the gold.

Bringing it home to India

The headline saving shrinks once Indian customs duty is added above your duty-free allowance, so UAE gold makes most sense within your limit or for jewellery you'll keep abroad. Use the customs calculator before you buy, and keep your invoice for declaration.

Rates are approximate Abu Dhabi metal prices, the same nationwide UAE gold rate sourced daily from Dubai; INR conversions use ₹26.07/AED. Confirm with the jeweller — final price includes making charges and 5% VAT on jewellery.

Abu Dhabi gold FAQs

Gold in Abu Dhabi is AED 486.25 per gram for 24K (about ₹12,677), AED 445.75 for 22K and AED 425.50 for 21K — the same as Dubai. These are metal rates, before making charges and 5% VAT on jewellery.
They're identical. Gold is one nationwide rate across the UAE, so Abu Dhabi and Dubai both sit at AED 486.25/g for 24K. Only the making charge and shop offers differ — there is no separate emirate rate.
At today's rate, Abu Dhabi 22K is about ₹11,621/g versus India's ₹13,230/g — roughly ₹1,609/g (12%) cheaper, and free of India's GST. Carrying it into India means customs duty above your duty-free allowance, which narrows the real saving.
As a rough guide, a returning male passenger residing abroad can bring up to 20 g of gold jewellery duty-free and a female passenger up to 40 g; gold beyond that is taxed, and the allowance depends on how long you've stayed abroad. Bars and coins are not covered by the jewellery allowance — declare gold on arrival.
India adds import duty and GST on top of the metal, while the UAE levies only 5% VAT on jewellery and zero on investment bars and coins — which creates the gap. The metal itself tracks the same global price everywhere.
