How much gold can you carry from Kuwait to India?

Reviewed 30 Jul 2026
Up to 40g of gold jewellery (women) or 20g (men) comes into India duty-free from Kuwait; above that, a reduced customs duty applies — about 6% if you've lived abroad 1+ year and pay in foreign currency, higher for shorter stays. Kuwait gold runs about 11% under India even after duty. Gulf pricing applies in Kuwait too — usually cheaper than Indian retail gold even once the reduced customs duty is added.

A common trap

Coins & bars are not jewellery

The duty-free allowance only covers worn or personal jewellery. Gold coins and bars get no free grams — they're dutiable from the very first gram, even for long-term residents. Carry the mint's invoice, hallmark and purity certificate.

Before you fly

What to keep in your hand luggage

  • Purchase invoiceShowing price, purity and date — for everything bought abroad.
  • Hallmark / purity certificateBIS or international (LBMA) marks clear customs faster.
  • Passport showing your stayVisa stamps prove your months abroad — that sets your duty rate.
  • Export certificate (if re-carrying)For jewellery you took out of India, so you're not taxed again on return.
  • Foreign currency for dutyThe 6% reduced rate applies only when duty is paid in foreign currency; pay in rupees and it rises to about 15%.
On the ground

Arriving at a major Gulf-route airport?

The duty-free rules are identical nationwide — these are just local arrival tips for the busiest NRI airports.

Cochin International (COK · Terminal 3)
International arrivals use the landmark Terminal 3 (around 12 customs counters), about 25 km from the city. Kerala's airports top India's gold-seizure list, so profiling and scanning are active — pre-fill the ATITHI app, use the red channel for anything over your limit, and keep invoices ready even when you're within it.
Important

When in doubt, declare

Walking the green channel with dutiable gold risks confiscation, a penalty up to the gold's full value, and prosecution under the Customs Act, 1962. If you're over your limit, take the red channel and pre-fill the ATITHI app before landing to speed it up.

Questions

Quick answers

How much gold can I carry from Kuwait to India?
After a year or more abroad, a woman can bring 40g of gold jewellery duty-free and a man 20g; the reduced ~6% customs duty applies above that when paid in foreign currency. Gold coins and bars are dutiable from the first gram. Check your exact figure in the calculator above.
Do the rules change by airport — Kochi vs Delhi vs Mumbai?
No. The duty-free allowance and duty are set nationally and are the same at every Indian airport. What varies is local enforcement intensity (Kerala's airports check hardest) and your departure country's paperwork — not the rules themselves.
Is the gold limit per person or per family?
Per person — allowances can't be pooled. But each traveller gets their own, so a couple flying together effectively doubles the household's duty-free limit, as long as each person's items are their own.
I'm visiting for a wedding, not returning for good. Do I still pay?
If you've been abroad over a year, you still get the 40g/20g jewellery allowance as a visitor of Indian origin. Anything above it is dutiable; coins and bars are dutiable from the first gram regardless.
What if I've been abroad less than 6 months?
You get no duty-free gold allowance and the high standard rate (~38.5%) applies to all of it. It's usually not worth carrying much gold on short trips.
What is the customs duty on gold brought into India?
For a returning traveller, gold above your duty-free limit is charged about 6% when you pay in foreign currency (about 15% if you pay in rupees), and about 38.5% if you've been abroad under 6 months. These passenger rates are separate from the commercial import duty that jewellers and importers pay on bulk gold.
Informational, not legal advice. Customs rules change and officers apply them case by case — the duty shown is a good-faith estimate using the current 2026 figures (~6% for eligible passengers who pay in foreign currency; ~15% if the same duty is paid in rupees; ~38.5% if abroad under 6 months) and today's gold rate. Departure cash/gold thresholds are each country's own rules; verify with that country's customs and with Indian Customs (CBIC), and pre-declare via the ATITHI app before you travel.
